MIDGETS YEARS 1-4

Cornwall Cricket Club has the best run junior programme in the country and the midget programme is it's crown jewel. Whether you're a parent on the boundary or a child learning the game, it doesn't get better than midget cricket at the scenic Cornwall Park! 

At Cornwall, we strongly believe in being a club for the whole family. As such, we encourage parents and caregivers to involve themselves in their child's cricket at whatever level they can. If you would like to be involved as a volunteer please don't hesitate in letting our convenors know! 

The Midget Grades include all children in School Years 1-4. Girls in Year 1 and 2 also typically play in the midget grades.

What are the registration fees?

​​​​​​​2023/24 Season Fees:

The full season fee for Year 1 is $99.00
​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The full season fee for Years 2, 3 and 4 is $175.00

Note full payment is required at the time of registration. 

What are the season dates?

​​​​​​​2023/24 Season Dates:

Years 2 and 3 start on Friday 3rd of November

Years 1 and 4 start on Saturday 4th November

The last weekend before Christmas is the 15th/16th of December, starting again on the 10th Feb until 23rd of March

Where are games played?

The majority of games are played at Cornwall Park with a maximum of two games over a season played at Michaels Avenue in Ellerslie.

What time are the games?

The midget grades play once a week on alternating Friday nights from 5.00pm and Saturday mornings from 8.30am over the season.

Games last approximately 1.5 - 2 hours.

There are 17 pitches around the outside of the three cricket fields. Download the pitch layout below:

Cancellations

We try not to cancel games, however if play is not possible then games will be cancelled. 
Our policy is to cancel by 3pm on Fridays and 7am on Saturdays if there is little prospect of the weather clearing.

Your Grade Convenor should send an email to confirm that cricket has been cancelled, otherwise cancellations will be posted on the Cornwall Facebook page 

Is there training?

Children in these grades typically do not have training during the week, however, this differs from team to team.  

What uniform do players wear?

All players must wear the correct Cornwall playing shirt (with McDonald's and Players Sports the only logos on the shirt), a Cornwall cap or bucket hat and white shorts. 

Suitable footwear, such as sneakers, should be worn. Bare feet is not allowed.

Rules and playing conditions

There are some important differences between the year groups in terms of rules and general playing conditions. 

Please ensure you are familiar with the rules for your year group before the start of the season.

What ball is used?

All Midget cricketers play with a soft cricket balls:

Years 1 and 2: Kookaburra PVC Kiwi Cricket Ball
Years 3 and 4: Kookaburra Star Softaball (this provides a good transition into hardball cricket ball which begins in Year 5 / U10). 

How many overs per game?

Our junior formats all fall into New Zealand Cricket's best practice recommendations. The length of each game is as follows:

Year 1: Skills-based activities followed by an 8 over per side game
Year 2: 12 overs per side

How does scoring work?

Matches are scored on paper score sheets. ​​​​​​​Each team will have been provided with a number of these score sheets at the start of the season.
​​​​​It's best to score in pencil, and have a rubber and pencil sharpener closeby at all times!

What protective cricket gear do I need?

Every team is supplied with their own cricket gear at the start of the season. This includes balls, bats and plastic stumps. 

Because Years 1-4 play with a softer cricket ball, protective gear like gloves, pads etc are not required. 

However, should your child may want to wear additional protection to feel more confident (gloves, pads etc) it is perfectly fine, you will just need to provide this yourself. 

When are teams named?

Your grade convenor will send a list of players in your team at least 10 days prior to your first game. 

How are teams selected?

Teams are selected to provide a mix of abilities and schools as much as possible. We do our best to accommodate any requests.

​​​​​​​Our junior teams are put together based on our selection policy for graded and non-graded teams. 

Where do I park?

As you drive in, take a left and you will find plenty of car parking at the ground. When it's busy we often have friendly car park attendants who will tell you where to park. 

Is there a canteen on site?

We have an on-site canteen that is open on both Friday nights and Saturday mornings that serve chips, drinks, iceblocks and general sweets. We accept both cash and eftpos.

The club bar will be also open for refreshments.  

JTS Sparling Super Series (Year 4)

Year 4 is the first year that players are eligible to play in the the JTS Sparling Super Series competition.

This competition presents an opportunity for the stronger Year 4 players to play against similar teams from Parnell, Howick Pakuranga, Grafton and Auckland University.

​​​​​​​​​​​​This starts at the end of November and trials will be held before this starts. Further details on trial dates and registration will be provided by the Year 4 Grade Convenor.
