Cornwall Dinner 2007/08

The 16th Feb proved to be a successful night for the Cornwall CC dinner. 63 people, mainly past players, packed into the upstairs of the pavilion. For many this was a once a season opportunity to meet up with old friends.

The crowd gathered from 6.30 p.m. and started enjoying the bubbles provided by Pernod Ricard. Immediately the stories started flowing of heroic cricket deeds and previous great nights at the club. As the night progressed the sixes that probably had just cleared the boundary were comfortably sailing over the pavilion!

We were soon upstairs and enjoying the food. Matt and Jill did us proud and those who had the roast beef particularly commented on how good it was.

There was an overall relaxed feeling and a great mix of people. The tables ranged between the youngsters, the getting old, the old and the truly distinguished. Ces Renwick claimed to be the only member in attendance of the Ponsonby Balmoral club, (Cornwall’s previous name) and we were delighted to be eating in the Ces Renwick room.

Paul Collingwood was unable to attend but did provide a shirt for auction. David Storer was an excellent MC and using his Real Estate skills raised no small amount for the shirt which was purchased by the Club President Roly Potter. He then very kindly donated the shirt straight back to the club for presentation. This was a very kind gesture and was much appreciated. Thanks again to Pernod Ricard for putting the wine on the table. I’m sure this helped the bidding!

Adrian Dale was forced into an “in my day” recount of his county career and by this stage everyone was in such high spirits that they thankfully would laugh at anything!

The evening ended up with much mixing and mingling upstairs in the pavilion with many promising to return the following day to see Cornwall in the One day Final. The crowd were good to their word and ended up together on the Sunday to see Cornwall claim the inaugural Crowe Cup and qualify for the National Club Championships in April.

It turned out to be a great weekend for the club. Roll on next year.
