Auckland | Player of the day : Mitchell Wright

Another excellent batting effort with everyone contributing and Alec & Jordan both retiring. There was a huge step up in the bowling over previous weeks with only 8 wides bowled. A couple of excellent runouts and a couple of good catches topped off a great performance. Mitchell was excellent behind the stumps and contributed with bat and ball as well.

Northern districts | Player of the day : Calem Morgan

We won the toss and opted to field first. Just what we wanted. A good, well disciplined display with only 13 wides allowed Jamaica to get 140. A good number but not unbeatable. Josh and James got 2 wickets apiece with Tanner and Calem getting 1 each. For our batting, Calem scored an excellent 29, Josh 25 and Jack 23. A good show boys. Jamaica were a bit loose in their fielding giving us plenty of extras with overthrows and 34 wides. In summary, our winning edge against a very good team came down to our superiority, on the day, in the field.

New South Wales | Player of the day: Matis Ellehuus

New South Wales won the toss and Matis our captain elected to bat first. We had our best batting performance this season, with the loss of only one wicket. Both openers, Jack and Laksh retired on 25 & 27. This was followed by Caleb our sub from Wellington being unlucky to be bowled on 23. Eamon retired on 25, and lastly Josh and Rohit ended the innings on 16 and 21 not out with the total at 175/1.This total was a good one to defend, however unfortunately compared to last week our bowling and fielding was not in the same zone as this week’s batting. While wickets were being taken, our bowling was too loose and down the leg side allowing easy hits and boundaries. In the end with Jamaica’s retired batsman returning we were unable stop the runs. A great game, well done Jamaica. Well done to player of day Matis for his all round game. Hard work in the field, and tidy bowling taking a wicket... Magic Moment went to Jack for caught and bowled in the final over.

Northern Districts | Player of the day : Ethan Rix/Henry Sneddon

These were a very evenly matched two sides. Both coaches were delighted at the special performances from one particular player in each team. In our case it was Ethan who scored the limit, not out, and hit some great shots along the way. We fielded second and it would be fair to say it was not one of our better days in the field with a lack of discipline being the culprit. We were saved, however, by a fine display of bowling from Henry who proved the point, just as in the AUS/NZ game last night, that line, length and consistency is all you need (not withstanding McCullum's input). For our bowling, Henry got an outstanding 5 wickets for 18 runs off 4 overs, Tanner 2 wickets. Josh, Ethan, Krish and Jason with 1 wicket each. Josh scored a good 36 runs from two innings, Tanner 26, Ethan 24, Jason 20 and Calem 14. Magic moment went to Josh for getting a great catch, behind, in wicket keeping . It's getting tougher each week, guys, so we need to put our 'all' into these last few games.

Dominica | Player of the day: George Jensen

Enjoyable match at ANI with its bigger boundaries. Northern Districts set a good total to chase of 152. Standouts with the ball for Dominica were Conor 2-21 off 4 overs and Sam 2-23 off four. In reply there was a steady trickle of wickets. The stand out exception was George Jensen who retired on 24 not out and then returned at the fall of the remaining wickets to bat on for 49. A stunning innings with glorious shots to the boundary around the ground. Well played George.

Victoria | Player of the day : Alex Griffiths

We lost the toss and were sent out into the field where Auckland got off to a flyer with both opening batsman retiring in quick time. Our quick bowlers were taking some punishment with just a touch sending balls rocketing over the dry outfield. Nick and Sam with medium pace and spin bowling slowed things down with Nick gaining the magic moment for his best over of the season so far 0-2. Followed up by Alex with some great on the spot demanding bowling we saw a huge improvement after Xmas and he well deserved his first wicket for the season (bowled) and followed up with another wicket after a great catch from Finlay 2-17 off 4 overs. Meanwhile Finlay was bowling beautifully at the other end with 1-12 from 4 overs which kept things tight. Flynn, 1-24 and Sam 0-14, both from 4 overs had the last overs when Auckland were trying to push the run rate and both did a good job. Jack bowled just the 2 with fantastic wicket keeping in the 2nd 12 overs 0-7 and James helped us out with 0-10. Findlay and Aakash opened our run chase with good positive batting and running. Aakash scored 8 and saw off the opening bowlers and Findlay and Jack both retired scoring 24 and 29 respectively. Flynn used his life and went on to get 10 and Sam chipped in at the end scoring 6 unfortunately being bowled on the ball after the winning runs had been scored. 46 extras certainly helped our cause and once again our boys kept their extras to 20 (7byes and 13 wides) making the coaches very happy! Thanks to all who helped. A great team effort - keep it up Victoria!

Auckland | Player of the day: Ben Andrew

We started OK with Ben and Jared both retiring. The Viotoria spinners were excellent and slowed our scoring down during the middle part of the innings. Fergus chipped in with some good runs at the end. 122 was always going to be a bit skinny, and with ANI proving to be our bogey ground for extras, gifting 40 odd extra's made it impossible to defend. Ben got POD for a retired, some good bowling (to no avail) and a good catch at deep mid-wicket. Well done Victoria. That was an excellent effort.

New South Wales | Player of the day : Liam Price

Lewis our captain this week won the toss and elected to bowl first. The tight bowling from the opening pairs of Jack and Liam followed by Eamon and Laksh was being backed by energetic fielding with everybody chasing hard. Mid innings Laksh had a sublime spell of bowling, taking four wickets in one over including his second hat trick this season. Eamon helped out taking the last wicket to have NT all out for 74 in the 20th over. NSW did not start well with both the openers falling cheaply. Liam came in and steadied the ship with a well struck 27 not out to retire, his third post Xmas. In the end Laksh and Josh got us past the finishing post. Well done to player of day Liam for 27 not out and tight bowling of 1/1 off 2 overs. Magic Moment went to Laksh for his hat trick.

New South Wales | Player of the day: Lewis Coulson

Central Districts lost the toss and Eamon our captain elected to bowl first. Despite a good bowling display and some good energy in the field highlighted by a great catch by Liam at point CD started well with the five batsmen all making good scores leaving us a good total of 147 to chase. We started well with Jack blazing 5 fours in a quick-fire 21, Eamon and Liam both retired on 25 and 26 respectively and we were looking okay. Then as things do in cricket the rate slowed a little and the chase was reallly on. Rohit with great support from Lewis running between the wickets did a good job to get us to the finish line but when he retired on 30 we needed 11 off the last over. Lewis and Matis got us close but we ended up 5 runs a short. A great game, well done Central Districts. Well done to player of day Lewis for his all round game. Hard work in the field, great support of Rohit running between the wickets, 2 runs not out and tidy bowling taking a wicket... Magic Moment went to Matis for his perfectly executed fwd defensive shot in the final over.

match report

Dominica | Player of the day : Rowan Burns and Robbie Brown

Played in fine conditions at Cornwall Park Primary School with the odd light shower scudding over. Jamaica batted first and Dominica contained them to a chaseable total of 141/5. Excellent contributions with the ball from Robbie Brown 1-18 off four overs, Connor Schmidt 2-15 off three and Av-neil Mohan 2-17 off three. Good wicket keeping again today by Rowan Burns and Robbie. In reply the openers Rowan and Sam Middleton got off to a solid start against a bowling attack with some reputation. Sam was removed only by an excellent catch, leaving Rowan and Robbie to build a foundation. Rowan compulsorily retired at 24no and Robbie 25no. However, despite the platform set, Dominica came up short even with the many wickets in hand. A good game nevertheless, and an encouraging performance of the first post–Xmas rules for these boys [last week a bye].

Jamaica | Player of the day: Matthew Wlison

We batted first and managed to get to a respectable 141/5 after, at one stage, looking like we might not bat out all the overs. A great knock from Thomas (29 not out) with Matthew (16), Rhys (13), Lachlan (16) and Arthur (18) all making good contributions. It was a tricky wicket with the ball keeping low (4 of our 5 wickets were bowled), so we thought we were in with a chance if we bowled well. Our fielding effort was one of two halves. The first half was sloppy, with poor backing up, no balls and wides. This helped Dominica race away to a great start and they were making thing look relatively easy. At around the half way mark they were well ahead of the pace but the retirement of two of their batters coincided with both with the bowling and the fielding tightening up. The runs dried up, the pressure built and wickets fell. Two run outs (to Rhys), a stumping (George) and much tighter bowling from all the bowlers meant Dominica ended up 13 runs short. A good recovery in the field after a poor start.

Auckland | Player of the day : Fergus MacLean

Henry followed instructions to the letter of the law by 1st winning the toss and 2nd selecting to bat. At about 77/5 after 12 the decision wasn't looking to good afterall. Some great tenacity by Fergus (30) plus strong contributions from Ben (23), Jordan (20) and a good last wicket partnership between Fergus & Henry turned things around. Otago were subjected to one of our best bowling displays of the year with everyone contributing. Special mentions go to Jordan for 3/3 off 2, Ben 2/7 off 2 & Alec 2/9 off 2. Magic moments were a great 6 from Jared and a full length diving catch from Alec to end the innings. Well done Auckland. Keep up the good work.

Northern districts | Player of the day : Josh Peacock

Canterbury batted first on a damp pitch with a 12-15kt crosswind. The boundaries had already been marked out and were exceptionally short so our fielding needed to be precise. It would be fair to say that we didn't perform as well in this area as we have on previous occasions and we conceded a lot of boundaries. James and Caleb both gained 2 wickets for 19 runs, Josh 1 for 18, Tanner 1 for 20 and Ethan 1 for 22. Defending 177 runs was never going to be easy but our 161 made for an exciting game that left the result only definite in the last over. I think the parents and friends were more excited and nervous than the players. Canterbury had a great day in the field to win the match. Well done Canterbury. Our batsmen still did very well, though, with Josh getting 38 runs, Caleb 26, James 22 and Tanner with 14. Josh had a great game, not only in run scoring, but for getting two marvelous catches in wicket keeping that gained him a well deserved Player of the Day.

Barbados won the toss and put us into bat first. With the new rules in place we experimented with our batting/ bowling lineup. This nearly caused the coach to have a cardiac arrest when our two opening batsmen were out for a duck. However, our mid order batsmen came to the rescue with Josh and Tanner retiring not out with 28 and 27. Eamon and James did well with 28 and 22 making a total of 164. Even with that relatively high score we knew we had to work hard in the field..... and we did..... with our tightest and best display to date. Ethan, Caleb, Eamon and Rohit each gained 2 wickets. Josh, James and Calem got a wicket apiece. We got them all out in 15 overs which reduced their score to 101. All together a fine effort, particularly as it was our first game after the break. Very well done boys.

Victoria | Player of the day : Jack Aitken

A close game for the first after the Xmas break. Some extra nerves knowing you would be out for real after 6 legitimate balls! Sent in to bat, a shaky start with Sam B bowled the first ball faced ,but he gritted out 6 more overs to almost see off some accurate fast bowling but unfortunately Jack run out in the process, nursing an ankle injury. Finlay also happy for the 6 ball rule batted 13 overs for 9 was also run out but had a good partnership with Flynn who scored 22 off 24 balls and was unlucky not to retire falling to another run out dismissal. Sam Middleton kindly filled in for us from the Dominica team and scored 15 from 22 balls. Nick (5) and Alex (1)were both not out at the end of our 24 overs. Thanks to those boys who helped Trinidad out with fielding as they were a player short. Sensational bowling from Flynn, 3 for 18 off 4 overs and a run out and Sam Middleton, 1 for 7 from from 4 with his first 3 overs maidens gave us a great chance. A great catch from Nick off Flynns bowling earnt him the magic moment. Finlay had the spinners revenge after a few boundaries were taken to end with 2 for 20 off 3.2 overs and Sam B felt the same way after being hit for 6 but bowling his man just as he reached 24! The 2 retired batsman came back to haunt us and Trinidad got to our total in 22 overs. Coach Tyrone Cooley should be very proud though as Trinidad had to score the runs from the bat as there were only 9 byes, 3 no balls and 9 wides which is a huge improvement for us. Thanks to all that helped.

Canterbury won the toss and put us into bat. With new rules the batting pace of the game seemed quite different with the boys clearly protecting their wickets. Laksh and Liam retired on 25 and 24, with Eamon unluckily playing-on on 22, leaving a score of 134 to defend. In what was most probably our best bowling display this season our bowling was tight with only 12 wides and 1 no ball. Every boy bowled very well and Canterbury was all-out for 73. Magic Moment went to Josh for great caught and bowled. Player of the day went to Eamon for his 22 runs and 4 wickets for 6 off 2, and a catch and run out assist as keeper. An encouraging start for the team under the new rules.

Jamaica | Player of the day : Rhys Badger

A nice day at Three Kings School for the first game of 2010 and our first with the “new rules”. We batted first and had star performances from Rhys (47 not out), who retired and then returned for a second knock; and Thomas with 27 (also retried and returned). A good contribution also from Arthur (18). We batted out our 24 overs (just, with the aid of our 2 retuning batsmen) and ended with 128/7. That wasn’t a huge total and the boys knew they had to bowl and field well to contain Central Districts. And bowl and field well they did – an excellent showing in the field with tight bowling. good backing up and a much reduced wide/no ball count (17) and byes/legs byes (13) [especially good when compared to the last game before Xmas when those counts were 38 and 28 respectively]. We took only 5 wickets but the bowling and fielding was tight enough to restrict Central Districts to 108/5. Thanks to Robbie (our sub). A nice win with the bonus of taking home the Challenge Cup.

Great to be back and Auckland got off to a good start to the 2nd half of the season. Our 1st 4 batsmen (Jordan, Henry, Alec & James from ND) were all retired and 175 was always going to be challenging. Jordan 1 for 10 off 4, Ben 2 for 11 off 4 & Mitchell 2 for 7 off 4 all bowled very well, with Henry and Jared supporting well. Still some work to do in the field but an excellent start.

Northern Territory | Player of the day: Bevan Tucker

Congratulations to Northern Territory for pulling together a great team performance despite not having seen each other for the whole Christmas break! Although the boys were apprehensive about the new rules, they proved themselves with most of them chalking up good runs once they stepped in to bat. Special mention must be made of Callum M who retired after 29 runs. Keiran also put in 18 runs easily before being caught. Bevan Tucker was awarded Player of the Day for great bowling. Though not a victory this time, the boys all showed they are set to be playing consistently strongly as the second part of the season goes on. Great stuff Northern Territory!

Well that was a bit of a tough day at the office for NSW. We lost the toss and were asked to bat on a slightly damp and long outfield. After last week’s great effort a number of the boys who normally bat well were a little off-song and we ended up with a score off the bat of 104 which when combined with 14 wickets it meant we would be struggling defend the total 62. Our bowling was also off with an abnormally high number of wides and a lot of balls were down the leg side which were punished, with big hits. Saturday is now history, but we still had a great team spirit, with boys who tried their hardest and continued to support one another. We have a few things to work on next year. Well done to player of day Jack for his 15 not out and 3 wickets for 17. Magic Moment went to Liam for his great catch.

With both teams having 2 fill in players from the team with a bye and a fast out field it was always going to be a high scoring competitive match. We batted first and Jack and Sam had a great partnership of 47 to get us going with Sam getting his highest score of the season, 11 and Jack 16.Fine bowling from Callum Kelly had Nick and Alex struggling but then our 2 fill ins Kieran and Taine (thank you boys) got us going again with a partnership of 67 - Kieran 39 and Taine 10 with no outs for either. Flynn and Aakash finished our innings in good style with Flynn scoring 16 and Aakash 9 with no outs. A score of 152 looked good but boy did it get tight in the end! Jack bowled well 16 for 1 from 4 but Sam had an off day with the ball but did effect a good run out. Nick earnt player of the day for his interesting bowling style which earnt him 30 for 2 off 3 overs with a great stumping (Kieran as wicket keeper) and a fantastic catch by Flynn (earning him magic moment). Flynn also bowled well with 26 for 2 from 4 overs. Taine got a wicket working with wicket keeper Kieran for the stumping. Alex reacted well under pressure bowling the last over with things very tight even if our fielding almost let us down (6 byes was a little ugly!). Kieran bowled superbly with only byes and 1 wide conceeded from his bowling and ended with 1 for 1 from 2 overs. A big thanks to Tyrone for filling the coach role and all others who helped. Calem and James both batted well with scores of 19 and 17.Ethan and Tanner did well and are improving markedly with each match. Our bowling produced three wickets each from Josh and Caleb and two wickets each from Tanner and Jason. Well done guys. Fielding is our strongest point and in todays game we had Ethan and Caleb really perform well. A brilliant diving catch from Jason secured his well earned player of the day. These sub fielders gave it their all, effecting several runouts that reduced Tasmania to a respectable total of 152 net. Thanks guys. Not many outs, bowled, this week, and Tasmania punished some of our better bowlers. Rowan Burns again showed real ability keeping wickets. Chasing the total Dominica got off to a slow start. Sam Middleton and Robbie Brown got the score board ticking over with the short square boundaries. Sam top scored with 41 unbeaten off 8 overs. Rowan Burns chimed in with an also unbeaten 32 off 8 overs. Play of the day was a lovely leg-side sweep shot off Tasmania’s strike bowler Noah West by Sam Middleton. A dry breezy day at Royal Oak Primary for an afternoon game; the last for 2009. We batted first and never really fired, apart from Thomas (21) who was the only batmen to make more than 20 runs. We had eleven outs and our overall total of 110 was always going to be light on a ground with short boundaries and a fast outfield. Our bowling and fielding effort simply was not good enough to defend that total – not aided by an enormous wide/no ball count of 38 plus 28 byes/leg byes. Credit to South Australia for a very good batting display. This was one of those days for us – nothing really went right. Time for the boys to have a long Christmas break to re-charge their cricket batteries.

A stormy north-westerly day, with early morning rain made the grass wet and conditions challenging. In the amphitheatre of the Balmoral Primary School grounds we fielded first. The weather must have interfered with the radar equipment, as 35 wides and no balls were gifted to Barbados. Yet there was some good within the bad with economical bowling from Oliver and George, run outs to George, Thomas and Ben (our sub) and a fine catch to Rhys. Barbados put 106 on the board which looked like a good total as the occasional light drizzle kept the grass wet. On our turn to bat Barbados showed us how to bowl a nice line (conceding only 15 wides). However good knocks from George (27 - including a lovely 6), Arthur (19), Oliver (19) and Thomas (18) - and positive contributions from all players - got us safely home with a total of 126. Thanks to Ben for subbing in. Thanks to the weather for holding off just enough to complete the game.

A tight win for Dominica with Canterbury’s batsman dominating early but Dominica apply the brakes, with some good fielding and death bowling. No single player of the day today with all boys contributing well. The play of the day is a run out from the deep dispatched by Robbie Brown. Sam Middleton top scored with the bat for net 17. Strong around his pads down leg side as usual. Rowan Burns excelled at wicketkeeping again in the second innings. Lewis and Matthew (our fill in - thanks Matthew) scored us another 42 run partnership with Lewis scoring 22 and Matthew 7. The batting was finished off with some big hitting by Flynn with 7 4s (earnign him magic moment) and only 1 out to end with 28 runs and good support from Aakash. A score of 161 but 11 outs was costly in the finish to leave us to defend 128. The bowlers fought hard with Sam 20 for 1 off 4 overs and a slightly controversial hit wicket giving Aakash 20 for 1 from 3 overs. A stumping from Flynn and run outs from Jack, Lewis and 2 from Sam was not quite enough to give us the win. Great to get some cricket. Only a 15 min delay whilst the last shower swept over the ground. We lost the toss and were asked to bat. Jordan and James opened well and got us off to a great start. Alec (19) top scored, followed by Ben (18) and Andrew (17). Some errant bowling (23 wides) kept it interesting, but Alec finished off well with 2 for 18 off 4 overs, took a good caught and bowled and was involved in a run out to round out his POD performance. Jordan generated fearsome (both to the batsmen and our keeper Fergus) pace and was unlucky not to get a couple of wickets.

New South Wales | Player of the day: Rohit Rajagopal

After the rain delay it was agreed to split the innings as the weather was still a little uncertain and half a game is better than no game. Laksh our captain won the toss and elected to field first. Auckland’s good start was matched by our own, with Eamon top scoring with 21 not out. After the first innings there was a small 2 run advantage to NSW. The weather stayed good and in Auckland’s second innings they doubled their score leaving us with a further 70 odd runs to get which we were unable to do falling 10 runs short. Well done to player of the day Rohit for is all around performance with the bat, taking 1 wicket and a great catch. We fielded first by agreement because three of our players were playing afternoon games and may have to leave early. This was, by far, our slickest fielding exhibition to date. We're now working like a well oiled machine. Calem deserves special mention for gaining three wickets for only nine runs. Well done Calem. You're improving markedly each game. Thanks, Tim, for lending Liam and Josh. They performed brilliantly and were a credit to NSW. Josh had a brilliant game, both at wicket keeping and batting where he made fifty four runs including two sixes and eight fours. Josh, that was great to watch such a fine display. Notwithstanding that, Caleb batted very well getting fifteen runs including two fours, and James getting sixteen runs. All in all, I think we have the making of becoming a fine team so you other teams had better beware.

It was unbelievable to be playing after all the rain during the week and although the grass was wet which gave a slow outfield and slippery ball the sun shone through out. Sam won the toss and put us into bat and he and Lewis got us off to a good start with a partnership of 30. Flynn hit some great boundaries toward the end of his innings scoring 14 and Aakash and Jack chipping in with 6 and 5 respectively. Nine outs left us with 66 to defend and the bowling started tightly with a great catch by Jack as wicket keeper off Sam's bowling, 3overs 10 for 1. Nick and Alex were economical 9 for 0 and 8 for 0 off 2 overs. Findlay and Jack stepped it up at the end taking some great wickets 27 for 2 and 17 for 2 off 4 overs respectively. Alex earnt his magic moment for a great direct hit run out and Aakash was again great in the field taking a catch and a run out. Lewis also took a good run out opportunity. All in all it was a huge improvement from last week despite the loss. Our coach David and Finlay now depart on a big OE so we will see them in 2010. Thanks to all who helped.

After Friday it was great to the see the sun and get a game. Eamon won the toss and elected to field first. Fielding was sharp with lots of good stops and controlled returns and we restricted Ellerslie to 69. Batting started well with steady partnerships. Laksh our player of the day backed up his bowling and keeping where he took 1 wicket and a stumping and blazed 33 not out setting up the win. This allowed our last partnership bring us home. Magic moment went to Harry (Jack’s little brother) who subbed for Ellerslie and took two wickets. Well done, I think !!!!

A fantastic morning after abysmal weather on Friday night. We were lucky to be at the Domain, which was one of the few grounds to remain open. The grass was wet and long and the boundary set at the prescribed distance. Both teams were one man down and the innings were split. On our turns to field we bowled down plenty of wides and no balls (40) and found wickets hard to find (we managed to collect only 10 in all). Despite this, Auckland’s total was kept pegged to 101 with a lot of help from the long grass. On our turn to bat we now found runs hard to find (should have mowed that grass?). Thomas top scored with 22 followed by Arthur (16); we lost only 6 wickets but posted only 100, our lowest total of the season. One run short! So close – some food for thought as each boy was capable of saving an extra run when fielding or maybe running an extra run while batting – every little bit helps.

Auckland | Player of the day: Fergus MacLean

Winning ugly is the best description. Jamaica bowled well, but or running and feilding was not up the the usual standard. The pressure was put on Andew and Jordan to come up with a wicket in their last overs, and they both delivered - little champions. POD goes to Ferg for a big step up over previous weeks. Keep up the good work Ferg.

An afternoon match at Royal Oak Primary. It looked like a high scoring ground with short boundaries and a fast out field. It proved to be so. We fielded first and struggled to contain the Western Australian lads. Firing down 45 wides and no balls and allowing 23 byes (some wild throws and poor backing up) did not help. On the plus side we grabbed 11 wickets, leaving Western Australia with a very good total of 164. On our turn to bat the boys came out firing, with George and Arthur each getting a 6 and Arthur power hitting his way to 38. Good knocks from Lachlan (24) and Thomas (19) got us home by two runs. A run out chance on the last ball went our way (just!), so a lucky escape.

A great day for cricket at Auckland Domain. We lost the toss and were put in to bat. Our training is now showing dividends with excellent teamwork and calling resulting in only 3 "outs" for a total score of 167 runs. Josh had a fine innings scoring 31 with Calem on 21. Tanner made 16, Caleb 11, Ethan 10 and James 8. Our 2 subs, Jaskaran and Alex scored 10 apiece. Thanks for joining our team, guys. You were both great assets. Our fielding is really shaping up well with good backing up and accurate returns to the wicket keeper. This week we will be working on our fielding to attain an even higher level of professionalism. Tanner really deserved being "player of the day" for his outstanding effort in wicket keeping. He received a nasty knock to his body but it didn't deter him from carrying on without complaint. Jaskaran put on a fine display of bowling, gaining 4 wickets for only 3 runs. Calem, Caleb and Josh got 2 wickets apiece with Ethan and James 1 each. Well done boys. You are all a credit to yourselves, your team and your parents.

Victoria | Player of the day: Flynn Cooley

With our coach sick and no practice this week we were not our usual tight unit. Thanks to Sam and Alex for wicket keeping despite it not really being their strength. Too many wides, byes and overthrows cost us dearly. Wickets were hard to come by with only Sam 15 for 1 off 3 and Flynn 28 for 1 from 4 overs. Finlay produced two fantastic run outs and was unlucky not to get wickets ending with 15 for 0 from 4 overs. 167 was going to be a mammoth task and with Jack not 100% a slow start was made. Nick earnt the magic moment for some great attitude and improved batting performance. Lewis and Sam had a great partnership of 48 scoring 23 and 5 respectively. Aakash is growing in confidence with his batting and had some close run outs which did not help his score. Finlay and Flynn got 9 and 10 respectively to get us to 93. Flynn deserved his player of the day award for steaminng in to bowl, toughing out some early wickets and scoring some great boundaries in his latter batting overs. Thanks to all that helped. Lots of fieldiing practice is scheduled for the upcoming week!

This may sound like a stuck record but again at the end of the game, the scores were within one run of each other and the difference was wickets lost. Liam our captain won the toss and elected to field first. Bowling was accurate with a steady number wickets. The number of byes given was much improved from last week which helped keep the total down and left us with 72 to get. The first partnership started well with no loss of wicket, the middle order partnerships where marked by a couple of unnecessary run–outs and a number of maiden over’s which meant we were not out of the woods. In the end, the last partnership was able to get the team home. Magic Moment went to Rohit for his great catch. Player of the day went to Eamon, for combination of 16 runs from the bat, 1 wicket for 8 bowling and solid wicket keeping.

Back again at Michaels Ave. The boys fielded first and some sharp bowling and fielding kept the runs in check and the wickets tumbling. 15 wickets fell in all with 4 off George’s bowling, 3 off Thomas, 2 off Rhys and 1 a piece to Nick, Matthew and Oliver. Wides and no balls were tidier at 23; and good to see 3 maidens (one with 2 wickets and another with one) - nice work. Ellerslie’s total was 71 (which included a six and plenty of 4s). The cold southerly that was torturing the poor scorers may have prompted some extra activity in the middle. George hit our team’s first 6 (nice work), Oliver got his top score (35) and solid contributions from George (25) and Arthur (24). All batsmen got in the double figures. Afternoon cricket is a luxury... no dew or early wake ups! Flynn our captain unfortunately lost the toss and we were put in to bat. A steady start from Nick and Jack scoring 3 and 13 set up the big partnership between Lewis and Sam of 57 with Lewis scoring 40 with a couple of great 6s and Sam turning the strike over well with only 3 non-scoring balls. Finlay and Aakash followed on with some solid batting scoring 14 and 6 respectively and Flynn and Alex finished off with a fantastic 6 from Flynn towards the end. A score of 133 for 8 (actually 9 when the score card was reconciled) gave us 106 to defend. Concentration was going to be the issue with a hot muggy afternoon but Flynn kept everyone on the job and lead from the front with a great stumping by Finlay for the first wicket off his bowling and a bowled wicket when we were under pressure. All the bowlers were tight with Jack 4 overs, 12 for 0, Flynn 4 overs 19 for 2, Lewis 2 overs 5 for 0, Aakash 2 overs 8 for 0 and a fantastic run out towards the end when things were getting very tight which earnt him the magic moment. Alex bowled 3 overs 11 for 0, Nick 2 overs 6 for 0, Findlay 3 overs 17 for 0 (tough being a spinner when the other team is going for the total) and Sam 4 overs, 2 for 25 (who dug deep after a tough start). It was just enough with the score declared 109 to 105 but was actually even closer on checking but we still scraped home for the win 106 to 105! Flynn voted Sam player of the day. On the positive side not too many wides and no balls were bowled which kept Extras down. Tidy contribution from George Jensen bowling 2 maidens, one a wicket maiden. A cool morning at Three Kings Primary School. Again a two innings affair. Good wicketkeeping by both Nove Vailahi and Sam Middleton. Rowan Burns showed a good pair of hands with tight close-in fielding including a sharp catch at cover, and two runouts. Generally however poor boundary fielding by the team leaked too many fours. Greater commitment getting to the ball is required. An average bowling performance with Auckland punishing balls down leg side. Best figures were returned by George Jensen with 3 overs 2 wickets for 13. Rohit Shinde has player of the day for a fine batting effort returning the top score undefeated on 16. Too many outs reduced the total from a respectable 120 down to only 81. Dominica outplayed in all facets of the game by Auckland. The shield lifted last week against Western Australia has departed after only one defence. Well played Auckland.

The highlight of the game came in the 12th over with Laksh bowling hat-trick maiden over which he later followed up with a stumping. Victoria left us with a good total to chase. The first game in long trousers for Nick and what a difference they made. Nick’s 2 x caught and bowled helped the cause. Jamaica grabbed 11 wickets in all with two off the bowling of each of Oliver, Nick, Lachlan and Thomas and one off the bowling of each of Rhys, Arthur and George. Arthur’s fiery pace proved a challenge for the batsmen (and wicketkeeper!) and Rhys put his body on the line by stopping one ball with his upper chest (ouch). The wide count dropped to 31 an improvement from last week (but still some radar tuning to be done) Wellington’s total of 103 looked challenging especially when we lost two wickets in the first over. However the first batting pair of Oliver (11) and Arthur (13) recovered to make a solid start. Runs dried up a little for the 2nd and 3rd pairs (but with a handy 14 from Thomas) keeping the game very tight. The final pair of Rhys (14) and George (32) got the scoreboard humming and bought the team home with a total of 122. A close game, and well played both teams.

Great to start with fantasic weather. The outfield was rather long, but the pitch was good and consistent. Captain Nick won the toss and with the grass a bit wet put Wellington in to bat. Wellington's first pair of Caleb & Flynn wacked the ball around and things looked a little out of control. The boys got a bit more into it and started to get the rewards. Best bowling was Krish with 3ov, 4w, 15run, Nick 3,1,9 and Chirag 4, 2, 22, including a maiden. Krish had 2 run outs as did Jason, who also took a caught a bowled (our only catch for the day). We held Wellington to 32 off the bat, but 56 extras was our archillies. Batting was our strength for the day with Jason and Nick having the highest partnership of 39, followed by Krish & Jono (our sub) 23 and Chirag & Mobeen 18. James showed some great defensive batting particularly against some of Wellington's better bowlers. Highlight of the batting was only 1 out, which was a RO in the last over. We were put into bat first and struggle with the long wet grass and good bowling by South Australia. Peter was player of the day in his first every game of cricket of any sorts. (great bowling Pete). Caleb top scored with 27 runs and good bowling by Caleb and Louis both with 3 overs for 6 runs.

New South Wales | Player of the day : Lewis Coulson

An excellent way to start the season. A fine day and a fantastic pitch at Waikaraka Park. Barbados won the toss and put us into bat. All the boys batted well and with some good calling and running between the wickets we ended up with 66 to defend. NSW started well with a wicket in the first over followed by several maiden overs through the innings including two wicket maidens. At the end of the game the gross scores (before dismissals are counted) were very close and it came down to NSW taking more wickets, limiting Barbados to 54. The boys had great team spirit and we were very impressed by the way they all supported and encouraged each other. Lewis had the ‘magic moment’ for scoring a 4 in his first ever game of cricket. Thanks to the scorers as well as it was their first time scoring.

Barbados | Player of the day: Joe Moodabe

This was a close game to kick the season off and the winner wasn't known until the final countback of wickets was completed. Fielding first on a dewy pitch, Barbados quickly got into a cricketing rhythm. We leaked a few runs to begin with but a few wickets pegged the opposition back. Bowling mentions go to Joe for a fine two bowled wickets for 8 runs off three overs. Seth contributed with tight bowling - no wides, no no balls, one wicket and 5 runs off three overs. Finally Karan did the damage with 3 wickets for two runs off three overs. Our batting was not quite as successfull despite a good start from Jaskaran with 12. The middle order collapsed and Seth and Karan were left to bring up a competitive total with 11 and 17 respectively.

match report

Victoria | Player of the day : Lewis Webb

A tough game to start, with Tasmania showing they are a well drilled unit even at the first game. We won the toss and elected to field and Jack started fantastically with a bowled wicket on the first ball of the game. Although we took 12 wickets at least one player from Tasmania in every partnership scored in the 20s. 21 4s and a six on short boundaries had us needing 142. The bowlers came back at the end with Finlay 4 overs 3 for 22, Lewis 3 overs 1 for 17 and 3 run outs and a catch, a wicket each for Jack and Flynn and run outs for Jack, Finlay and Aakash. Sam was the most economical at 0 for 10 off 2 overs. The batting started well with Jack scoring 13 and Lewis 25 but then the bowlers found their mark and Sam and Nicholas scoring runs but losing wickets and Alex and Aakash doing well not to get out but finding run scoring nearly impossible. Flynn and Finlay scored 8 and 5 respectively against tight bowling and fielding. Magic moments to Jack for the start and Alex for good all round performance. Thanks to Tyrone Cooley for filling in for David. Lots to work on especially in the batting department but the first hard ball game was achieved with everyone smiling despite the loss!

JAMAICA | Player of the day : Oliver Wood

A lovely day and a day of firsts: first game of the season, first game at ANI, first game of hard ball, first game at the Cornwall club for Lachlan, first club game ever for Matthew, and first hat trick for Oliver! We batted first and made an imposing total of 189, with fine contributions from George (43), Arthur (26), Oliver (22) and Thomas (19) and only five outs in total – and a worthy 9 runs from Matthew in his first innings (well done). On our turn to field we had a mixed bag – we claimed 19 wickets in total (12 bowled, 5 runs out and 2 catches) but also bowled 54 wides (!!), so a few winter cobwebs on the boys’ radars. Highlights were Oliver’s 4 wickets (including hat trick) and two run outs, George’s 3 wickets, Lachlan’s two and one each for Rhys and Nick. We restricted Canterbury to 65, to win the game. Well done boys. A great start to the season.

CANTERBURY | Player of the day: Joshua Durrans

Well what can we say.... a tough day at the office. Started off OK with Canterbury fielding first, but with only one practice under our belts we were all learning. Extras was the big scorer however Ishan, Thomas Birch, Joshua and Joseph all stayed in the positive. A few things to work on at practice which makes it all that more exciting. Highlights were a caught and bowled by Thomas Birch and Ishan, plus good keeping bu Joshua. Looking forward to our next game, hopefully in great weather also.

match report

Dominica | Player of the day : Connor Schmidt

A beautiful morning at Cornwall Primary School. The artificial strip in good condition. The outfield grass a little long, and the ball held up going to the boundary. Dominica batted well if conservatively. Very few boundaries were to be had but also very few outs augured well for the boys looking to the post-Christmas rules. No one was throwing away their wicket. Sam Middleton top scored with the bat but there were good contributions from many others. A modest total was posted. The boys bowled adequately, with relatively few wides conceded. A bit short of a length often, and more no balls for the triple-bounce-rule than will be conducive to defending a small total in later games. The magic moment went to the safe hands of Rohit Shinde in a sharp caught and bowled wicket. Connor Schmidt in his first ever game of club cricket kept behind the stumps with the confidence of a young man who was born to the role. Very few byes scored acknowledged his commitment to the task. A deserved man of the match performance. An agreement between the coaches to play an unorthodox two innings approach for each team was inspired. The watching batting team boys avoided getting antsy, the fielding team concentrated for the whole period, the scorers got a breather between each innings change, and the umpires compared subtleties of rulings on wides down leg side and interpretation of contact with the body. A close game with the boys squeaking a two run victory. Lesson for week one might be careful batting and retaining your wicket boys may just trump glorious boundaries.
