Why coach?

Why Coach?
  • Spend time with your children
  • Love the sport and want to put something back into it
  • Get some exercise
  • Help others achieve
  • Personal development, learn new skills
  • Contribute to my local community
  • “Cornwall needs volunteers in order to that my children can play cricket”
  • Make new friends
Can I do it?

You don’t need to have played cricket extensively in order to be a good coach.  What you do need is enthusiasm, organisational skills, be good with small groups of children and the patience of a saint!  What you’ll get out of it is satisfaction, the achievement of learning something new, coaching skills to use at work or home and a lot of great memories to share with your child.

The first step is always the hardest.  Rest assured that you will not be alone.  This season a number of volunteers will take start their coaching careers at Cornwall.  It is natural to be apprehensive.

There is however, a strong support structure for coaches at Cornwall.  Help is on hand from senior coaches within your grade, your grade convenor and the coaching coordinator.  Advice and encouragement is only a phone call away.

The first and most valuable piece of advice is “don’t go it alone” As we all know cricket is a team sport.  This also extends to the support team.  Each team needs a coach (or co-coaches), a manager, scorers and umpires.  Good team organisation and support will lead to a happy season for team members.

One of a coaches best skills, should be to be able to organise rosters!

Is it too late to start?
It is never too late to start.  If your child has played for a number of seasons, or has come into cricket at an older age, you can still make a contribution.Coaching volunteers are always required at all grades.  Assistance will be on hand to help you catch up if you need it.

Where do I Start?

Firstly, let us know that you want to become involved.  Contact the Cornwall Development Manager Brent Findlay. Your convenor will be able to discuss coaching options with you.  Remember, the sooner you start, the easier it will be to keep up with your child’s cricket development.

First time coaches of Midget Grade teams should attend the following courses as appropriate:

  • Milo Have A Go,
  • Kiwi Cricket
  • Getting Started in Coaching a Cricket Team

Your convenor or the coaching coordinator can advise you on this. Prior to the start of the season, a number of course will be run by the Auckland Cricket Association.  Details of dates and venues can be found at www.aucklandcricket.co.nz

Please contact Kieran McMillan, ACA Coaching Coordinator to register your interest in attending a course.  Ph: 09 815 4802 Email: kmcmillan@aucklandcricket.co.nz

Cornwall will also be running Skills and Drills and Running a Practice sessions prior to the start of the season.  All coaches are welcome to attend these sessions.
